This workshop aims to support front line staff with a greater cultural awareness of working with diverse and multicultural clients.
In a multicultural city as Toronto and the surrounding GTA, our clients come from all over the world. They bring with them different perspectives and cultural practices. When those perspectives are not taken into consideration for program development or client interaction, we can further isolate individuals who are already struggling with their integration.
While poverty does not discriminate, it certainly marginalizes those already living on the fringes. In Toronto, more than 55% of visible minority residents were living on less than $30,000 in 2016. As such, Poverty is Racialized. The most in need residents are often visible minorities living on the intersection of many barriers. Intercultural awareness then must be understood in the context of social inequality, financial instability, poverty and institutional bias.
This workshop will engage participants through innovative group activities, critical discourse and self reflection.

When we live in a society, we communicate to create meanings of the things around us. The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with a clear understanding of interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and how the way we communicate, impacts our perception and environment.
Communication is very much subjective and relative. It is as much about getting our point across as it is knowing who we are getting them across to. For example, an action in one culture might be looked upon favorably while frowned in another.
Engaging activities around social expectation, role definition, role conflict and body language will be facilitated to help youth understand the importance of eye contact, firm handshake, or just even a simple smile :)
But before any of that, in order to communicate effectively, we must first understand the rules of engagement that govern our behaviour. This workshop can help show you how!
