Nabeel Rahman, M.A., RSW did a TED Talk!
People of colour play many different roles and live on the intersection of multiple barriers. We have to navigate through imposed identities, expectations and stereotypes that create innumerable challenges. As such, this talk focused on overcoming those challenges through acknowledgement, empathy, self-determination, and action.
Nabeel Rahman, M.A., RSW was a guest at the talk show - Let the Quran Speak to offer a faith based perspective on coping with stress.
Life at times can be overwhelming. The challenges of our lived experiences, childhood trauma, financial constraints and relationships can get the better of us. For those struggling, it is not always easy to seek help. Like many, I have experienced overwhelming emotions of grief, loss, and anxiety. But I have also experienced joy, happiness, and contentment. Healing can begin when you acknowledge the hurt, or anxiety, or sadness, or anger and allow yourself to explore the journey of self-awareness. What I have learned is not to shy away from the emotional discomfort but to (1) create space for it, (2) to understand it, (3) and to heal through it.
Here at Positive Thought, we recognize that our lives are multi-dimensional. We might be well integrated in some components of our life and struggle in other aspects. We take on a holistic approach and our counselling sessions are designed to assist individuals build resilience and coping strategies. We can discuss ways in which to stay engaged by identifying your strengths and values.
The taboo of counselling and mental health across cultures presents a significant barrier...but it doesn't have to. We are at the forefront of advocating for change and breaking the stigma that prevents many of us from seeking the help that we need.
We have experience working with youth and adults from various ethnic backgrounds who might be struggling with:
We are by no means perfect ourselves. In fact, as persons of colour, we struggle everyday to combat negative stereotypes. The thoughts and beliefs we hold onto as a result of our previous experiences, often go on to influence the outcomes that are to come. What we have learned from our struggles is the importance of acknowledging our emotions, observing our thoughts and engaging in healthy behaviours to address the barriers we experience. Collectively, we can make challenges become opportunities, barriers become stepping stones and turn hardships into ease. Let us assist you in empowering yourself to live a life of fulfillment and contentment. It is not easy...but is not impossible either!
